The following set of photographs were taken for my first proper assignment at Elam. We were required to create a series of at least eight images that would explore the idea of a 'domestic front', whether it be a house, a lifestyle, a country of origin or even just physical object in a domestic home. The brief itself was quite lenient and open-ended so I ended up going for a more conceptual approach with my interpretation. I decided to capture a somewhat darker side to domestic life, showing the stranger things that happen within the privacy of people's houses during the middle hours of night. My aim was to create a series of extremely film-like and atmospheric images that would embody a strong sense of ambiguity within them, showing scenes of strange events that seem to be taking place in an otherwise normal suburban home.

And fills the emptiness of what thoughts have left.

Here, the days meld into weeks and the months into years

Here, she sits alone.

With eyes wide open

As if she waits for her children to return from school

Or her husband from work.

Her arms limp and battered

And bruised with age.

Her hands trembling with eternal sin

With what’s left of an aching heart and a distorted mind.

Here, she reassures herself of the chance she has been given

Of the hope of renewal and the promise of forgiveness.

Here, she sits alone for the eternal sedation.

Here, she waits alone for an immaculate end.

And whittles into the cracks of my blemishes.

Bittersweet as you lie through your teeth.
These flimsy words we exchange.

With glassy eyes, shafted weary.
Dangling on a noose,
As you hang me dry,
Stapled to your eyes, suspended on your fingertips.
All the right moves in all the wrong places.
I’ve strung out in frozen arms as you release the hounds,
Inch by inch,
Month by month,
The noose tightens, the rope lowers
Bends and drags
As they laugh from the fence.
Only with strangers, will you catch the sun and paint our faces
Lift our quivering jaws into the skies and smile
Holding close
Waiting blissfully,

For the collapse into the Gallows
Once more.
My face is cracking,
Cut open inside out.

If only I could leave you.
I would fix this shaky heart.
